Electrical repair

Dead outlets, dead rooms, faulty wiring, failing switches and panels. Most of what we are called for is a fault that has to be traced, not a part that has to be guessed at.

Chapter 01

Good breakers and dead rooms is a real diagnosis, not a mystery

It is the single most common call this shop takes. Nothing is tripped, the panel looks healthy, and part of the house has no power. People assume the panel has failed and brace for the cost of replacing it.

Usually it has not. When the breaker is holding but the load is dead, the fault is downstream of the breaker and upstream of the outlet: a backstabbed connection that has finally let go, a scorched neutral in a junction box, a switch leg that has worked loose, or a run of cable damaged where nobody can see it.

One of our customers put it plainly after we came out: three rooms had suddenly gone dead despite good breakers. That is the shape of the job, and it is an afternoon's work when it is traced properly.

How we trace a fault back to the failure

We start at the dead end of the circuit and work backwards toward the panel, testing at each device rather than replacing devices to see what happens. Swapping parts until the symptom disappears is quick, and it leaves the real fault sitting in the wall.

Once the break is located we open it up and look at why it failed. A loose backstab, an overloaded neutral and a nicked conductor all read the same from the breaker, and they call for different repairs. Finding the cause is what stops the same room going dark again next year.

Chapter 03

What we hand back at the end

Three things: the circuit working, a plain answer about what actually failed, and an honest view on whether anything else on that panel is heading the same way.

If the repair uncovers something larger, a panel that is out of capacity or wiring that will not pass an inspection, we will tell you what it would cost to put right and what happens if you leave it. We are not going to turn a repair call into a rewire you did not ask for.
