Panels and heavy-ups

Electrical service upgrades

Older Beaumont homes and businesses were wired for a load nobody runs any more. A heavy-up brings the service up to what the building actually draws today.

Chapter 01

Why an older panel cannot carry a modern air conditioning load

A house wired decades ago was sized for the appliances of the time. The single biggest thing that has changed since is cooling. A modern condenser pulls a startup surge that a panel of that age was never asked to handle, and on this coast the air conditioning runs most of the year.

The tell is usually behavioural rather than dramatic. Breakers trip when the unit kicks in on a hot afternoon, lights dip at startup, or you have run out of spaces and someone has doubled up on a breaker that was not built for it. A fuse box instead of breakers is its own answer.

The point of a heavy-up is capacity and headroom, not a shinier box on the wall. If you are adding a unit, a shop, a pool or a standby generator, the service is the thing that has to be sized first.

The permit and the utility come before anything is cut

A service upgrade is not a job you can quietly do on a Saturday. It touches the utility's equipment as well as yours, so it needs a permit and it needs the power dropped and reconnected by the utility on a scheduled day.

Crown Electric acquires the permit and coordinates that scheduling as part of the work. It is the part that most often decides how long the whole job takes, and it is the part homeowners have no reasonable way of chasing themselves.

Chapter 03

Removal, new gear, inspection, clean-up, in that order

The existing equipment comes out. The new gear goes in: service cable, meter base, panel and breakers sized for the load we agreed, properly grounded and bonded.

Then it is inspected, and only then is it finished. We clean up after ourselves and leave you with a panel whose circuits are actually labelled, which sounds like a small thing until the next person needs to find a breaker in a hurry.
